Work out the cost

Could my insurance help with the cost?

Use the exact medicine name when asking your plan about cover. Include the health problem the prescription would treat.

What does the plan need to answer?

Ask whether the medicine is on the plan’s formulary, its list of covered medicines. Ask what you would pay and what approval paperwork is needed.

Prior authorisation means the plan agrees to payment before the prescription is filled. Ask who sends the paperwork and how to check its progress.

Is Medicare weight coverage straightforward?

Medicare calls its prescription medicine coverage Part D. Your share of a covered bill has a name too: copay.

As of September 2026, medicines used solely for weight loss remain excluded from Medicare’s regular Part D drug benefit.

Part D may cover a medicine for a different accepted use, including diabetes; the rules of each plan still apply.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services uses the short name CMS.

GLP-1 is one of the body’s signals affecting both blood sugar and appetite.

In a September 2026 statement, CMS described the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge: eligible people pay $50 as their monthly copay for certain weight medicines.

December 31, 2027 closes the Bridge, which opens July 1, 2026. Its payment system is separate from usual Part D.

Your $50 copay under the Bridge adds nothing toward the annual cap on personal spending under Part D.

The programme offers no added help for people on low incomes.

In 2026, a GLP-1 medicine payment already made on your behalf by Part D that year rules out use of the Bridge.

Bring your medicine list and insurance payment records. Ask the prescriber to check your health conditions, your plan type, and those earlier payments.

Can a savings card be added?

Branded weight-drug copay cards require private insurance under September 2026 terms; people with Medicare, Medicaid, or military coverage cannot use them.

Those covered by Medicare or another government programme can often use the maker’s cash price by paying for it themselves. Each cash offer’s terms still need checking.

Ask whether people with your coverage can use this exact cash offer. Ask what you would pay without using insurance.
